Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 65 years of age or older (any gender)
- You have been diagnosed with either COPD (a lung condition affecting breathing) or asthma, confirmed by a doctor using standard guidelines
- You are currently using a specific type of inhaler that combines three medicines in one device (called a pMDI), and you have been on this stable treatment for at least 4 weeks
- In the past 12 months, you have either been hospitalized at least once due to a flare-up of your lung condition, OR you have had at least 2 flare-ups that needed steroid tablets and/or antibiotics
- You are able to learn how to use an inhaler correctly and can handle and communicate about the device
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the study
Who may not be able to join:
- Your main inhaler is a different type of device, such as a dry powder inhaler, soft mist inhaler, or a nebuliser (a machine that turns medicine into a mist)
- You have regularly used a spacer device (a tube that attaches to an inhaler) for 3 or more weeks in the 3 months before joining
- You are currently having a flare-up of your lung condition, or had one within the last 4 weeks that has not fully cleared up
- You have significant memory or thinking difficulties (based on a standard test score) (confirm with trial site)
- You have a serious ongoing illness such as advanced cancer, severe heart failure, or severe liver or kidney problems
- You are already taking part in another clinical trial that involves a treatment or intervention
- You are unable to use a mouthpiece-style spacer device — for example, due to a physical issue with your mouth or face, or severe anxiety
- You have a known allergy or sensitivity to the materials used in spacer devices
