Who might be able to join this trial:
For healthy children (control group):
- Children aged 7 to 15 years, of any sex
- Children who have never been diagnosed with asthma
- Children who have not used any inhaled asthma medication in the past 2 years
- Children who have not experienced wheezing or shortness of breath in the past 2 years
- Children whose parent or guardian, and the child themselves, have provided written agreement to take part
For children with asthma:
- Children aged 7 to 15 years, of any sex
- Children who have been formally diagnosed with asthma by a doctor
- Children who have been using inhaled corticosteroid (preventer) treatment for at least 6 months
- Children whose asthma is either well-managed with no current need to increase medication, or poorly managed and whose doctor has confirmed that stronger medication is needed
Who may not be able to join:
- Children who were born prematurely before 32 weeks of pregnancy
- Children who have another ongoing heart, lung, or neurological condition that affects their breathing (other than asthma)
- Children who have a serious underlying illness, such as cancer
- Children who are currently taking beta-blocker medication
- Children who have an active immune system disease
