Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are 40 years old or older and are being seen as an outpatient (not currently admitted to a hospital)
• You have chronic bronchitis, meaning you have had a mucus-producing cough for more than 3 months within a 2-year period
• You are a current or former smoker with at least a 20 pack-year smoking history (for example, smoking one pack a day for 20 years, or two packs a day for 10 years)
• You have been diagnosed with COPD, confirmed by breathing tests showing specific results related to how much air you can breathe in and out (confirm with trial site for exact test values)
• You have been on stable COPD medications — such as inhalers or other prescribed COPD treatments — with no changes in the past 3 months
• You use supplemental oxygen at rest or during activity, at a flow of 4 liters per minute or less
• You are willing and able to give your consent to participate and to follow the study schedule and requirements
• If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you must have a negative blood pregnancy test before joining

Who may not be able to join:

• You have had an upper respiratory infection (such as a chest cold) within the past 6 weeks (you may be able to reapply after this period)
• You have previously had surgery to remove part of a lung or surgery on the lining around the lung
• You have a history of a collapsed lung (pneumothorax)
• Scans have shown signs of certain other lung conditions, such as scarring of the lungs, lung disease caused by your job or environment, or a long-term lung infection
• You have a history of asthma
• You have been significantly exposed to harmful substances at work or in your environment that are known to cause lung disease
• You have a positive pregnancy test (for women who could become pregnant)
• You have another serious ongoing health condition that the study doctor believes would make it difficult for you to participate safely
• You have any reason you cannot safely have an MRI scan (based on a screening questionnaire)
• You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
• You have had a bacterial or viral respiratory illness within 6 weeks before the MRI scan
• You have a known heart rhythm problem (cardiac arrhythmia)
• You are unable to fit into the special vest used during the MRI scan (confirm with trial site)
• You are unable to hold your breath for 10 seconds
• You would have difficulty following instructions during the MRI scan
