Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who have been diagnosed with squamous-cell carcinoma of the oesophagus (a specific type of oesophageal cancer), confirmed by a tissue biopsy

• Women who could become pregnant must agree to use contraception from the time of signing consent until at least 5 months after the last dose of the trial treatment

• People who have signed a written consent form agreeing to participate in the study

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have already received systemic (whole-body) treatment for advanced oesophageal squamous-cell carcinoma
• People whose cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, such as the liver, lungs, bones, or brain
• People who have a hole or an abnormal connection (fistula) in the oesophagus
• People who have experienced bleeding from the tumour
• People who have an active infection, such as tuberculosis
• People with a known history of HIV infection
• People with an active autoimmune disease (a condition where the immune system attacks the body) — though certain limited conditions, such as type 1 diabetes, stable thyroid conditions requiring only hormone replacement, or skin conditions not needing systemic treatment (such as vitiligo, psoriasis, or hair loss), may still be considered eligible (confirm with trial site)
• People taking medicines that suppress the immune system, or long-term steroid tablets at a dose above 10 mg of prednisolone per day
• People with active hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus infection — though people with inactive or well-controlled hepatitis B, or those who test negative for active hepatitis C, may still be considered eligible (confirm with trial site)
• People who have previously received treatments that target specific immune-system pathways (known as checkpoint or T-cell therapies)
• People who have had another cancer within the past 3 years, with the exception of certain early-stage skin cancers or early cervical cell changes
• People who have had major surgery within 4 weeks before joining the study
• People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or who have a positive pregnancy test
• People who have had a stem cell transplant or an organ transplant
• People with serious, uncontrolled heart or blood vessel conditions — including severe heart failure, unstable chest pain, a heart attack, or uncontrolled irregular heartbeat — occurring within the 6 months before the start of the trial
• People with certain lung conditions, including lung scarring (fibrosis), non-infectious lung inflammation, or other uncontrolled or acute lung diseases
• People who have received a live vaccine within 30 days before the first dose of the trial treatment (non-live vaccines are permitted)
• People whom the trial investigators consider to be unsuitable for other reasons
