Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are joining this trial of your own free will and have signed a consent form agreeing to take part
- You are aged 70 years or older (any gender)
- You have been diagnosed with esophageal squamous cell cancer (a type of food pipe cancer), confirmed by a tissue or cell sample test
- Your cancer cannot be treated with surgery, or you have chosen not to have surgery, but you are still well enough to receive anti-cancer treatment

- Your blood, heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys are all working well enough, and your immune system is not severely weakened

- You have previously had a hole or tear in your esophagus (food pipe), or have already received treatment for any cancer
- You have previously had radiotherapy to your chest area
- You have an active autoimmune disease (where your immune system attacks your own body), or have had one in the past
- You are currently receiving or have previously received a type of immunotherapy called a PD-1 inhibitor, or are already taking part in another clinical trial involving a treatment
- You are allergic to large protein-based medicines or to any ingredient in S-1 capsules (a type of chemotherapy tablet)
- You have a heart condition that is not well controlled
- You have a condition that weakens your immune system (such as HIV), or you have active hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or active tuberculosis
- You have an active infection or have had an unexplained fever above 38.5°C in the 2 weeks before screening
- You have been diagnosed with another type of cancer in the last 5 years (except for certain fully cured skin or cervical cancers — confirm with trial site)
