Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 40 years of age or older at the time of signing the consent form.
- People who have had a confirmed diagnosis of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) for at least 12 months before joining.
- People whose lung function test results meet specific measurements related to airflow and lung capacity (confirm exact values with trial site).
- People who have had at least 2 moderate COPD flare-ups, or at least 1 severe COPD flare-up, in the 12 months before screening.
- People who have been on a stable inhaled COPD maintenance medication regimen (either two or three inhaled medicines) for at least 3 months before screening.
- People whose COPD symptom score (called a CAT score) is 10 or higher at the first visit.
- People who currently smoke or have smoked in the past, with a smoking history of at least 10 pack-years (confirm this measurement with the trial site).
- People who have been medically stable and free from a COPD flare-up for at least 4 weeks before the first visit, and also free from a flare-up for at least 4 weeks before the randomisation visit.
- Women who are able to become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test at the first visit and at the randomisation visit.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have a significant lung disease other than COPD, such as asthma, active lung infection, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, or certain other lung conditions.
- People whose chest scans or X-rays suggest another lung condition that is significantly contributing to their breathing symptoms.
- People who have an unstable health condition affecting areas such as the heart, digestive system, liver, kidneys, nervous system, blood, hormones, or mental health, or who have a major physical or cognitive impairment.
- People with significant left heart failure.
- People who have had a heart attack, unstable chest pain, a heart procedure, uncontrolled irregular heartbeat, cardiomyopathy, significant aortic valve problems, or signs of fluid on the lungs within the past 6 months.
- People who have pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the lungs).
- People who have a history of a condition that makes them more prone to infections.
- People who have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or microscopic colitis.
- People whose blood or laboratory test results are outside the normal range.
- People who have evidence of active or chronic liver disease.
- People who have a history of HIV infection or who test positive for HIV.
- People who have previously had lung volume reduction surgery.
- People who have had, or have been treated for, cancer within the past 5 years before screening.
