Who might be able to join this trial:

• People aged between 18 and 80 years old
• People who have had an acute (sudden onset) mild stroke that was not caused by a blood clot travelling from the heart
• People whose stroke symptoms are mild, based on a standard stroke severity scale score of 5 or less (NIHSS ≤5)
• People where the stroke started no more than 48 hours before joining the trial, or — if the exact time of stroke onset is unknown — where the person was last known to be well no more than 48 hours before joining
• People where the trial medication can be given within 48 hours of symptoms starting
• People (or their legal representative) who have signed a consent form agreeing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have received, or are planned to receive, a clot-dissolving treatment given through a vein, or a procedure to remove a clot from a blood vessel in the brain
• People who have bleeding inside the brain confirmed by a brain scan
• People who had some level of physical disability before the stroke (confirm with trial site what level applies)
• People with a known heart condition that could cause clots to travel to the brain, such as atrial fibrillation, a faulty heart valve, a recent heart attack (within the past 3 months), or other specific heart conditions (confirm with trial site for the full list)
• People with a history of bleeding inside the brain (primary intracerebral haemorrhage)
• People with a history of any other type of bleeding inside or around the brain, such as bleeding in the spaces surrounding the brain
• People with an untreated or inadequately treated brain aneurysm or abnormal blood vessel in the brain
• People who have had significant bleeding anywhere in the body within the past 30 days
• People with active bleeding, or blood test results showing problems with blood clotting, or who have taken certain blood-thinning medications in the past 48 hours
• People who have had major surgery within the past 14 days
• People with persistently high blood pressure that has not been brought under control with treatment (above 180/110 mmHg)
• People whose platelet count (a measure of clotting cells in the blood) is below a certain level
• People with severely reduced kidney function
• People with a known allergy or medical reason to avoid the study drugs tirofiban or aspirin
• People who are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
• People who have a tumour inside the brain (except for small, symptom-free meningiomas of 1.5 cm or less)
• People with a serious illness where life expectancy is less than 6 months
