Who might be able to join this trial:
- You must be 18 years old or older.
- You must have had a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel that started within the last 4.5 hours (if the exact time is unknown because you were unconscious or had trouble speaking, the last time you were seen to be well is used instead).
- A brain scan (MRI) must show a specific type of small stroke — a single, roughly round or oval damaged area no larger than 20mm, located in certain deep parts of the brain (confirm with trial site for exact location details).
- You must have been able to carry out your normal daily activities without significant difficulty before the stroke.
- Your stroke symptoms must be mild, based on a standard medical scoring system called the NIHSS (a score of 5 or less out of 42).

- You may not be able to join if blood-thinning medications would be considered unsafe for you, for example because you are actively bleeding or have a low platelet count.
- You may not be able to join if there is a medical reason you cannot receive a standard clot-busting drug given through a drip (called rt-PA).
- You may not be able to join if the blood vessel responsible for your stroke is significantly narrowed (50% or more) or completely blocked.
- You may not be able to join if you have a condition that requires you to take blood-thinning (anticoagulant) medication, such as an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) or a blood clot in your leg.
- You may not be able to join if you are unable to swallow tablets or take medicine by mouth.
- You may not be able to join if the doctors running the trial decide for any other reason that taking part would not be appropriate for you.
