Who might be able to join this trial:

If you have COPD:

• You are a man or woman aged between 40 and 75 years old
• You have been diagnosed with COPD or have a medical history of it
• You have smoked at least 20 pack years (roughly 1 pack a day for 20 years, or equivalent), and use of e-cigarettes/vapes is also allowed
• Your breathing test results show moderate COPD (specific lung function measurements fall within a certain range — confirm with trial site)
• Your COPD symptoms noticeably get worse when you catch a cold
• Your COPD has been stable with no flare-ups in the past 8 weeks
• You are allowed to use short- and long-acting inhaler medicines for your breathing
• You may have a history of asthma, hay fever, or seasonal allergies, as long as these have not been active in the past 8 weeks
• You do not have any other significant lung conditions besides COPD, asthma, or allergic rhinitis
• Having a positive allergy skin test is allowed

If you are a non-smoking control (comparison group without COPD):

• You are a man or woman aged between 40 and 75 years old
• You have not been diagnosed with COPD
• You have smoked fewer than 5 pack years total, and have not smoked or used e-cigarettes/vapes in the past year
• Your breathing test results are within the normal range (confirm with trial site)
• You may have a history of asthma, hay fever, or seasonal allergies, as long as these have not been active in the past 8 weeks
• You do not have any other significant lung conditions besides asthma or allergic rhinitis
• Having a positive allergy skin test is allowed

If you are a smoking control (comparison group without COPD but with a smoking history):

• You meet all the same criteria as the non-smoking control group above, except you have smoked at least 20 pack years, and use of e-cigarettes/vapes is also allowed

Who may not be able to join:

• You have another lung condition that limits airflow, such as bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis, a collapsed or scarred airway, lung cancer, tuberculosis (TB), or pulmonary fibrosis
• You have a significant ongoing health condition (such as a heart, liver, kidney, neurological, blood, or mental health condition) that the trial doctor believes could put you at risk or affect the results
• You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, breastfeeding, or tested positive for pregnancy at the screening visit
• You have used steroid medicines (by mouth, inhaler, or nasal spray) in the past 8 weeks
• You have taken antibiotics in the past 8 weeks
• You are currently taking nasal medicines, anti-leukotriene medicines, or antihistamines
• A blood test at your screening visit shows you already have a high level of antibodies to a specific cold virus used in the trial (confirm with trial site)
• You live with or regularly spend time around babies under 6 months old, very elderly or frail people, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people with weakened immune systems (such as those with HIV, transplant recipients, or people receiving chemotherapy or immunotherapy)
• You are already taking part in another clinical trial that the trial doctor believes could make participation risky, affect results, or create too many appointments for you
