  • People between 18 and 75 years old
  • People whose condition meets current medical guidelines for a procedure called mechanical thrombectomy (a treatment to remove a blood clot from a brain artery)
  • People who were largely independent in daily life before their stroke (a low disability score of 2 or less on a standard scale)
  • People whose brain scan shows a score of 6 or higher on a measure called ASPECTS, which indicates how much of the brain has been affected
  • People who have a blockage in a specific brain artery called the middle cerebral artery (MCA), with or without a blockage in the connected artery called the ICA
  • People whose mechanical thrombectomy procedure was not successful, meaning little or no blood flow was restored
  • People for whom brain surgery (craniotomy) is expected to take place within 24 hours of when the stroke began
  • People who had a stroke that was discovered upon waking, where brain scans show there is still salvageable brain tissue surrounding the damaged area

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have certain blood vessel conditions in the brain, such as an aneurysm or abnormal blood vessel formation, or who are already planned for a brain blood vessel surgery

  • People with poorly controlled diabetes where fasting blood sugar is above a certain high level (16.7 mmol/L)
  • People with poorly controlled high blood pressure above specific thresholds (sitting systolic above 180 mmHg or sitting diastolic above 110 mmHg)
  • People with severe liver problems, shown by certain liver enzyme levels being more than 3 times above the normal range
  • People with a low platelet count in their blood (below 100×10⁹/L), which can affect clotting
  • People who have taken part in another clinical trial or used a trial drug or device within the past 30 days, or who are currently in another clinical trial
  • People for whom general anaesthesia or brain surgery is not considered safe
  • People with any other condition or medical history that the trial doctors believe could affect the safety or results of the study (confirm with trial site)
