Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with either a severe acquired brain injury (a serious brain injury from causes such as a head trauma, stroke, infection, or lack of oxygen, where the person initially fell into a deep unconscious state and has difficulties with movement, senses, thinking, or behaviour) — or a stroke (either a blocked or bleeding blood vessel in the brain) that did not cause a deep loss of consciousness.
  • For severe acquired brain injury: the injury occurred between 7 and 90 days ago.
  • For stroke: the injury occurred between 3 and 30 days ago.
  • For severe acquired brain injury patients: a specific thinking and awareness assessment (called the Level of Cognitive Functioning scale) has returned a score of 6 or higher, indicating a certain level of awareness and responsiveness.
  • A consent form for taking part in the study has been signed.
  • A family member or carer is available who is able to help complete a personality questionnaire as part of the study.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who had an existing neurological condition (a brain or nervous system disorder) before this injury.
  • People whose ability to communicate or pay attention is so severely affected that they are unable to complete the thinking and memory tests required by the study, as identified during initial screening.
  • People who do not have sufficient proficiency in Italian to participate.
  • People who are currently in an emergency medical situation.
