Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are having a surgical procedure to remove lymph nodes from one armpit (called an axillary lymph node dissection, or ALND), or who are having a smaller lymph node sampling procedure (sentinel lymph node biopsy) where there is a good chance the surgeon will also need to remove more lymph nodes.
- People who have had a previous sentinel lymph node biopsy, as long as it took place less than 6 months before signing up for the trial.
- People where the surgeon is able to find at least one cut lymphatic vessel and at least one suitable vein during the lymph node removal surgery, which can be used for a bypass procedure.
- Women with breast cancer who are between 18 and 75 years of age (inclusive).
Who may not be able to join:
- Men with breast cancer.
- People who do not speak English.
- Women with breast cancer where the cancer has come back in the armpit area.
- Women who have previously had a full axillary lymph node removal surgery.
- Women whose breast cancer treatment requires lymph node removal from both armpits.
- Women whose surgery involves only the smaller sentinel lymph node biopsy, with no full lymph node removal.
- People who already have a swelling condition in the affected arm that was present from birth or developed naturally (primary lymphedema).
- People who already have swelling in the affected arm caused by another condition or treatment before the lymph node surgery takes place (secondary lymphedema).
- People who have already had radiation therapy to the armpit area before this study or surgery.
- People whose life expectancy is less than 2 years for any reason.
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding.
- People who have had problems with alcohol or drug misuse within the 6 months before screening.
- People with severe psychiatric illness.
- People whose cancer has already spread to other parts of the body at the time of the pre-surgery assessment.
