Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with a spinal cord injury, brain stem stroke, or another neurological condition that means you cannot walk and have significant weakness or loss of movement in both arms and hands, making it very difficult or impossible to use a computer, smartphone, or tablet by hand — with no expectation of recovery.
- OR you have been diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) or another progressive neurological condition that is well understood, where you currently have significant weakness in your arms and legs, and your treating neurologist expects the disease to progress to the level described above within one year of joining the trial.
- Your doctors expect you to live for at least 12 months.
- You are able to communicate in English.
- You have a reliable caregiver who is consistently present to support you.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a moderate to high risk of serious complications during or after surgery.
- You have an active implanted medical device (such as a pacemaker) already in your body.
- Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is above 40 (confirm with trial site).
- You have a history of seizures or epilepsy that has been difficult to control.
- You have a history of diabetes that has been difficult to control.
- You need MRI scans as part of managing any ongoing health condition.
- You have a weakened immune system, whether from a condition you were born with or one you developed.
- You currently use cigarettes, tobacco, or any other tobacco products.
- You have a diagnosed psychiatric or psychological disorder.
- A brain MRI scan has shown bleeding, a tumour, or unusual brain structure (confirm with trial site).
- You have any other condition that, in the opinion of the research team, could make it unsafe for you to participate or undergo the implant procedure (confirm with trial site).
