ACL Reconstruction Group:

Adults aged under 70 who have injured their ACL within the past year and have a planned surgery to reconstruct it
Have signed a consent form agreeing to take part

ACL No Reconstruction Group:

Adults aged under 70 who have injured their ACL within the past year and do not have plans for reconstruction surgery
Have signed a consent form agreeing to take part

Early to Moderate Knee Osteoarthritis (OA) Group:

Adults aged under 70 who have been diagnosed with early to moderate knee osteoarthritis (a specific grading scale will be used to confirm this)

Have signed a consent form agreeing to take part

Control Group (healthy comparison participants):

Adults aged under 70 with no significant changes seen on a knee X-ray

People who have had previous knee surgery (for ACL groups, this means surgery before the current knee injury)
People with serious circulatory or nerve-related complications in the legs
People with a BMI over 32
People with a significant joint condition (such as inflammatory or degenerative joint disease) affecting joints other than the knee being studied, as assessed by a clinician
People who are not able to have an MRI scan — for example, those with a pacemaker or who experience claustrophobia
People whose leg measurements are too large to fit the MRI knee scanning equipment — specifically, a thigh circumference greater than 73.5 cm (measured 10 cm above the kneecap) or a calf circumference greater than 61.5 cm (for control group participants, the thigh measurement must also be no smaller than 34.3 cm)
People who report using cannabis, opioids, or other drugs in a way that meets the definition of drug addiction
