Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Adults who are 18 years of age or older at the time of signing the consent form
  • People who have been diagnosed with a rheumatic disease, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus (SLE), juvenile idiopathic arthritis, spondyloarthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, giant cell arteritis, vasculitis, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, dermatomyositis, polymyositis, or arthritis related to inflammatory bowel disease
  • People who have been taking medications that suppress the immune system for at least 3 months before their planned surgery
  • People who are already scheduled for a planned (non-emergency) total shoulder replacement surgery
  • People who are willing and able to sign a written consent form before any study-related procedures take place

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who currently have an active infection or cancer
  • People who are having shoulder replacement surgery because of a bone fracture or a tumor
  • People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
  • People who are having shoulder replacement surgery due to a fracture or tumor (rather than due to a rheumatic disease)
  • People with a severe and highly active form of lupus (SLE) — the trial site may instead offer these individuals a place in a separate observational arm of the study
  • People who are not able to provide written consent, or who do not have the mental capacity to do so
