Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are having a specific surgery called a pancreaticoduodenectomy (removal of part of the pancreas and surrounding tissue) at one of the four hospitals taking part in the trial, for a non-cancerous or cancerous tumor in the head of the pancreas.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are under 18 years old.
  • You are currently pregnant, have recently given birth, or are breastfeeding.
  • Your surgery is planned for a reason other than a tumor — for example, for a long-term inflammation of the pancreas (chronic pancreatitis).
  • You currently have an active infection at the time of joining the trial.
  • You are already taking medication that weakens your immune system before the operation.
  • You have a condition (other than cancer) that weakens your immune system, such as a congenital or acquired immune deficiency, a problem with your spleen or no spleen, HIV with a low immune cell count, or an extremely low level of white blood cells (confirm with trial site).
  • You are taking certain medications that suppress the immune system — such as biological therapies or high-dose steroid medications — or are expected to receive these in the first week after surgery (confirm with trial site).
  • You are currently under a court or government order restricting your freedom.
  • You are under a legal guardianship or similar legal protection arrangement.
  • You are not covered by a social security or equivalent health insurance scheme.
  • You do not wish to take part in the study.
