Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between 18 and 85 years of age who are reasonably functional in daily life (a doctor would assess this using a standard scale called ECOG, scoring 0 to 2)
- People diagnosed with a specific type of oesophageal (food pipe) cancer called squamous cell carcinoma that has spread locally, confirmed by biopsy, at a stage classified as III, IVA
- People who have already received a course of radiation therapy (40–50.4 Gy over 20–28 sessions) combined with chemotherapy drugs (platinum and fluoropyrimidine), where the cancer either remained or got worse, and surgery is not considered an option
- People who have not previously received immunotherapy drugs (called immune checkpoint inhibitors) and have already received the first dose of a drug called nivolumab after their combined radiation and chemotherapy
- People whose cancer cells test positive for a protein called PD-L1, with at least 1% of tumour cells showing this marker on biopsy
- People whose cancer shows at least one lesion (area of disease) that can be measured or identified using standard imaging criteria (called RECIST 1.1)
- People with a limited form of stage IVB disease involving only lymph nodes outside major organs may be considered if the main tumour is the primary concern and a type of internal radiation treatment called brachytherapy is suitable, at the treating doctor's discretion
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a history of severe allergic reactions to antibody-based medicines
- People who have cancer that has spread to the brain or the lining around the brain, particularly if it is causing symptoms or requires treatment
- People with an active autoimmune disease (a condition where the immune system attacks the body's own tissues), or where one is known or suspected
- People whose oesophagus (food pipe) is too narrowed to allow brachytherapy (internal radiation treatment) to be performed
- People whose cancer involves the inner lining of the windpipe or airways (trachea or bronchi)
- People whose cancer lesions span more than 10 cm in total
- People who are already participating in another clinical trial involving immunotherapy treatments
- People who are planned to have a surgical procedure to create an opening in the oesophagus (oesophagostomy)
