Who might be able to join this trial:
- You had an ischemic ("blocked artery") or hemorrhagic ("bleeding") stroke more than 6 months ago that left you with weakness in one arm and hand
- You are between 22 and 70 years old
- Your arm movement ability falls within a specific range on a standard stroke recovery scale called the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (confirm with trial site)
- You have at least some sensation remaining in your affected arm and hand, as measured by the same scale (confirm with trial site)
- You are able to communicate, understand instructions, give your consent, and follow two-step directions
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a serious illness or condition besides your stroke — such as another neurological condition, cancer, severe heart or breathing problems, or kidney failure — that could affect your participation
- Your doctors believe you are at high risk of having another stroke
- You have significant pain or stiffness in your affected arm that would prevent you from completing the physical training part of the study
- You score below a certain level on a short memory and thinking test (confirm with trial site)
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are unable to temporarily stop taking blood thinners or anti-clotting medications for about two weeks around the time of a surgical procedure
- You have any implanted medical device that is not safe for MRI scans, or any active implanted device of any kind
- You have metal plates or rods implanted in your upper spine (between certain vertebrae in your neck and upper back)
- Imaging shows a blockage or narrowing in the spinal canal that would make the surgical part of the study risky (confirm with trial site)
- You have severe claustrophobia that prevents you from having an MRI scan
- You are currently taking medications for spasticity (muscle stiffness) or epilepsy
- You score above a certain level on a mental health questionnaire AND a study doctor has determined you are not suitable to participate (confirm with trial site)
