Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are willing to take part and able to attend follow-up appointments
• You are between 18 and 75 years old (male or female)
• You have been diagnosed with esophageal squamous cell cancer (a type of throat/food pipe cancer) that has been confirmed by a tissue sample, is at an advanced but potentially operable stage, and has shown a partial or complete response after 2–3 rounds of chemotherapy combined with an immunotherapy drug

• You are generally well enough to carry out light activity and care for yourself (a standard medical fitness scale rates you as 0 or 1 out of 4)

• You have lost 10% or more of your body weight in the past 2 months and this has not improved despite nutritional support
• You have had a major operation or serious injury within the 4 weeks before starting the trial
• You have a build-up of fluid around your lungs, heart, or abdomen that cannot be controlled and keeps coming back
• You have previously had radiotherapy or targeted therapy for your cancer
• You have taken part in another clinical trial within the 4 weeks before starting this one
• You have been taking high-dose steroid tablets or other medicines that suppress your immune system in the 2 weeks before starting the trial (some exceptions may apply — confirm with trial site)
• You have received a cancer vaccine or a live vaccine within the 4 weeks before starting the trial
• You have an active autoimmune disease (where your immune system attacks your own body), or a significant history of one — some exceptions apply, such as well-controlled thyroid conditions or type 1 diabetes on stable medication (confirm with trial site)
• You have been diagnosed with an immune deficiency condition, are HIV positive, or have had an organ or bone marrow transplant

• You have had a serious infection in the 4 weeks before starting the trial, or signs of an active infection requiring antibiotics in the 2 weeks before starting
• You have a history of scarring or inflammation of the lung tissue (interstitial lung disease), or significantly reduced lung function
• You have active tuberculosis (TB), or a history of TB that was not properly treated
• You have active hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection at levels above a specific threshold (confirm with trial site)
• You have abnormal sodium, potassium, or calcium levels in your blood that have not improved with treatment within 2 weeks before joining
• You have a known allergy or serious reaction to any of the drugs used in this trial, including the immunotherapy drug (camrelizumab), paclitaxel, or carboplatin
