Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have had a stroke caused by a major blocked blood vessel in the brain, where a procedure to remove the clot is planned within 24 hours of symptoms starting
- People whose stroke symptoms are rated as moderately severe or worse on a standard stroke severity scale (a score of 6 or higher on the NIHSS)
- People where the expected wait time between being enrolled in the study and the start of the clot-removal procedure is more than 30 minutes
- People whose brain scan (CT or MRI) shows a score of 6 or higher on a standard scale used to assess how much brain tissue has already been affected (confirm with trial site)
- People who were largely independent in daily life before the stroke (a score of 1 or less on a standard disability scale)

Who may not be able to join:
- People whose stroke involves bleeding in the brain, rather than a blocked blood vessel
- People with serious liver or kidney problems, including those whose liver enzyme or kidney function blood test results are significantly above normal levels, or who are on dialysis
- People with very high blood pressure at the time of enrolment (top number above 185 mmHg or bottom number above 110 mmHg)
- People with a heart condition rated as Class II or higher on a standard heart failure scale
- People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- People considered to be at significant risk of inhaling food or fluid into the lungs, for example due to obvious nausea or vomiting
- People whose life expectancy is estimated to be less than 6 months due to another serious illness
- People whom the research team considers unsuitable for the trial for other medical reasons
