Who might be able to join this trial:
- People whose stroke has been diagnosed according to the criteria set out by the Fourth National Academic Conference on Cerebrovascular Disease
- People who have been found to have swallowing difficulties, detected through a water swallowing test
- People experiencing their first stroke, with symptoms present for no longer than 6 months, and whose condition is currently stable
- People who score high enough on a standard memory and thinking test (called the MMSE) to show they can understand and cooperate with treatment — the required score depends on education level
- People who have enough sitting balance to remain seated for at least 30 minutes
- People aged between 18 and 80 years old
- People who have been fully informed about the study, have given their consent to take part, and whose family members have also been informed and are able to support the swallowing therapy exercises at home
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose swallowing difficulties are caused by something other than a stroke
- People who have a tumour or other growth in the mouth or throat
- People who have significant problems with their vision or hearing
- People who have conditions affecting their ability to recognise objects, carry out purposeful movements, or pay attention to both sides of their environment
- People with severe difficulties in thinking or reasoning, or who have unstable mental or emotional health that would prevent them from cooperating with treatment
- People who have ferromagnetic (magnetic) metal implants or retained metal fragments in the brain
