Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have been diagnosed with painful chronic pancreatitis and whose doctor has determined they are suitable for a procedure called P-ESWL (a non-surgical treatment that uses shock waves to break up blockages in the pancreas)
- People aged between 18 and 85 years old
- People who are willing and able to give their formal agreement to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have already been admitted to hospital for ESWL treatment during the time the study is running
- People who have a medical reason that makes ESWL treatment unsuitable for them (confirm with trial site)
- People who show signs of heart failure, such as swelling in the legs, or who have been classified as having more than mild heart failure. For people aged 70 or older, additional heart tests would be done beforehand, and those with certain abnormal results would not be eligible
- People with serious breathing problems, including low oxygen levels in the blood or those who need a breathing machine. For people aged 70 or older, lung function tests would be done beforehand, and those with certain abnormal results would not be eligible
- People who are receiving large amounts of fluids through a drip in the 24 hours before the procedure
- People with low blood pressure at the time of the procedure
- People with abnormally low or abnormally high sodium (salt) levels in their blood
- People with severe liver disease, such as cirrhosis with fluid build-up in the abdomen, or a liver abscess
- People who have taken anti-inflammatory pain medications (such as ibuprofen) within the 7 days before the procedure
- People who cannot use anti-inflammatory medications rectally, including those with reduced kidney function, an allergy to these medications, active bleeding in the digestive tract, stomach ulcers, or who are already taking these medications for another reason (not including low-dose aspirin for heart protection)
- People who have a blood clotting disorder or who have taken blood-thinning medication within the 3 days before the procedure
- People who have had an episode of acute pancreatitis within the 3 days before the procedure
- People with a known active heart or stroke-related condition
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who do not have a rectum due to previous surgery
