Who might be able to join this trial:

For the AION group (people with a possible eye condition affecting the optic nerve):

  • Doctors suspect you may have a newly developed loss of blood supply to the optic nerve (the nerve connecting your eye to your brain), based on symptoms in one eye such as swelling at the back of the eye, noticeable vision loss, or changes in how your pupil responds to light
  • You are 50 years old or older

For the GCA group (people with a blood vessel inflammation condition called Giant Cell Arteritis):

  • You have been recently diagnosed with Giant Cell Arteritis, confirmed by a doctor's examination and an ultrasound scan
  • You do not currently have any vision changes in either eye related to Giant Cell Arteritis, such as temporary or permanent loss of vision, or temporary or permanent double vision
  • You are 50 years old or older

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have any metal implants in your body that are affected by magnets
  • Your kidneys are not working well enough (confirmed by a specific blood test result) (confirm with trial site)
  • You have a known allergy to the dye used in MRI scans
  • You have severe fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia)
  • You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have previously been diagnosed with a nerve condition in the same eye, or have a prior diagnosis of Giant Cell Arteritis
  • You have already been taking a steroid medication called prednisolone for more than 5 days before joining the trial
