Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 21 years of age or older, of any gender or race
- People who have had their first-ever stroke (either a blockage-type or bleeding-type stroke), confirmed by a brain scan, and whose stroke symptoms began at least 6 months ago
- People who have weakness in one arm, measured at a specific level on a standard arm function scale (a score of 62 or below out of 64)
- People whose brain and arm muscle responses can be detected using a specific type of nerve stimulation testing on the affected thumb muscle
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had strokes affecting both sides of the brain
- People who have another condition affecting the muscles or nerves in their arms, separate from their stroke
- People who have a history of depression or other mental health conditions that were not well controlled by medication, either before or after their stroke, in a way that might affect their ability to take part in the study
- People who have been diagnosed with dementia or who are currently taking medication for dementia
- People whose blood pressure is not well controlled despite medical treatment at the time of joining, specifically if the top number is 185 or higher or the bottom number is 110 or higher (confirm with trial site regarding reassessment options)
- People who have any health or safety factors that would make MRI scans, nerve stimulation, or a type of ultrasound brain stimulation unsafe for them (confirm with trial site for specific risk factors)
- People who are currently enrolled in another clinical study focused on stroke recovery
- People for whom there are concerns about their ability to follow the study procedures and attend all required visits
- People who are pregnant
