Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older
- People who have been diagnosed with peripheral arterial disease and have stable leg pain when walking (symptoms that have not changed for at least 6 months)
- People whose ankle-brachial index (a blood pressure measurement comparing the ankle and arm) falls between 0.4 and 0.9
- People whose doctor has referred them to a heart or lung rehabilitation program
- People who have previously had a procedure to restore blood flow to their legs, as long as their symptoms are stable and other criteria are met
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had a recent abnormal resting heart tracing (ECG), a heart attack within the past 2 weeks, or another recent acute heart event
- People who have unstable chest pain (angina)
- People who have heart rhythm problems that are not under control
- People who have severe narrowing of the aortic heart valve with symptoms, or another significant heart valve condition
- People whose heart failure is currently causing symptoms and is not well managed
- People who have had a recent blood clot in the lungs
- People who have an active non-heart-related illness that could be made worse by exercise, such as an infection or an overactive thyroid
- People who currently have inflammation of the heart muscle or the sac surrounding the heart
- People who have an inflamed vein with a blood clot (thrombophlebitis) that is currently active
- People who have a physical disability that would make safe exercise impossible
- People who have significantly abnormal levels of minerals or salts in the blood (such as potassium or sodium)
- People who have a heart rhythm that is significantly too fast or too slow and is not being managed
- People who have a significant blockage in the heart's electrical conduction system (high-degree heart block)
- People who have an irregular heart rhythm (atrial fibrillation) with a heart rate that is not under control
- People who have a thickened heart muscle condition (hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy) with a resting blockage measurement of more than 25 mmHg
- People who have a known, currently active tear in the main artery of the body (aortic dissection)
- People whose resting blood pressure is severely elevated (top number above 200 or bottom number above 110)
- People whose level of cognitive impairment would prevent them from following study instructions
- People who are currently pregnant
- People who have moderate to severe nerve damage in the hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy)
- People who have open wounds or broken skin near where a blood flow restriction cuff would be placed
- People who have an active deep vein blood clot, or who have had a serious blood clot event within the past year
