Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are scheduled for a procedure called ERCP and this is your first time having it, or you are having a repeat ERCP because a previous attempt to access the bile duct was unsuccessful.
- You are at least 18 years old at the time of the procedure.
- You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part in the trial.
Who may not be able to join:
- You have previously had a surgical procedure to cut, stretch, or widen the opening where the bile duct meets the small intestine.
- The procedure planned for you uses a specific technique called "rendez-vous cannulation" (confirm with trial site).
- The ERCP procedure could not be carried out because you were unable to cooperate sufficiently during it.
- The ERCP procedure had to be stopped before it properly began due to problems related to the sedation or anaesthetic used.
- The doctor was unable to reach the relevant opening in your small intestine during the procedure, for example because of a narrowing in the bowel.
- You currently have a condition called acute biliary pancreatitis (a sudden inflammation of the pancreas related to the bile duct).
- Your internal anatomy makes it impossible to reach the relevant area using the standard equipment for this procedure — for example, if you have previously had a type of stomach surgery called Roux-en-Y.
