Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are having their first-ever acute ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel) and who have had their first samples collected within 48 hours of symptoms starting and being admitted to hospital
- People who are 18 years of age or older (any gender is eligible)
- People whose stroke has been rated at a severity score of 4 or higher on a standard medical stroke scale called the NIHSS
- People who fully understand what the study involves and have agreed to take part by signing a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have taken antibiotics or probiotics in the month before being admitted to hospital, or during the follow-up period
- People who have an active infection such as pneumonia or a urinary tract infection
- People from whom stool (bowel) samples cannot be collected within three days of being admitted to hospital, or during the three-month follow-up period
- People with serious problems affecting major organs such as the heart, lungs, liver, or kidneys
- People who have not given, or are not able to give, their consent to take part in the study
- People who have a history of significant digestive or bowel conditions
- People who have another serious condition affecting the brain or nervous system
- People who the trial investigators consider unsuitable for the study for other reasons (confirm with trial site)
