Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older who are well enough to carry out daily activities (assessed using a standard medical scale called ECOG, with a score of 0, 1, or 2)
- People with esophageal (food pipe) cancer that has come back or spread, confirmed through a tissue sample, including those diagnosed at an advanced stage from the start or those whose cancer returned after earlier treatment
- People who have never received a type of immunotherapy called a PD-1 inhibitor, or those who stopped PD-1 inhibitor treatment more than 3 months ago and whose cancer later came back (not those whose cancer failed to respond to PD-1 treatment in the first place)
- People whose heart, liver, kidneys, and blood counts are working at levels that meet the trial's requirements
- Women who could become pregnant must have a negative pregnancy test and agree to use effective contraception during the trial
- People who have read and signed a consent form agreeing to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose cancer did not respond to, or stopped responding to, a previous PD-1 inhibitor treatment
- People who have, or are strongly suspected to have, a hole or abnormal opening in the esophagus (called a fistula)
- People with an active autoimmune disease or a condition that weakens the immune system and requires ongoing treatment (some exceptions may apply — confirm with trial site)
- People who need to take corticosteroids or other immune-suppressing medicines regularly (low-dose or topical steroids used on the skin may be allowed — confirm with trial site)
- People who have a history of, or currently have, a lung condition involving inflammation or scarring (interstitial lung disease or pneumonitis)
- People with serious, uncontrolled heart problems, such as significant heart failure, unstable chest pain, a recent heart attack, or uncontrolled irregular heartbeats
- People with a serious active infection, including active tuberculosis (TB), or viral hepatitis (hepatitis B or C) that is not adequately controlled
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People who have had a major operation recently, or who have a high risk of bleeding or are on blood-thinning medication in a way that may not be compatible with the trial treatment (confirm with trial site)
- People with any other health condition that, in the treating doctor's judgement, would make it unsafe or not possible for them to participate
