Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with weakness or paralysis on one side of your body (such as after a stroke), and this diagnosis was confirmed at least 3 months ago.
  • You are between 18 and 80 years old.
  • Your overall health is stable, and your rehabilitation plan or medications for your neurological condition have not changed in the past 4 weeks.
  • You have enough cognitive ability and language understanding to follow simple instructions and give informed consent, based on a short memory and thinking test (confirm with trial site).
  • You are able to perform breathing exercises and blow air out forcefully enough to be measured by a breathing test called spirometry.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have a serious pre-existing lung condition, such as severe COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, or active lung cancer.
  • You have an unstable heart condition, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, unstable chest pain, a heart attack within the past 6 months, or significant heart failure.
  • You are unable to form a proper seal around the mouthpiece of the breathing training device, for example due to weakness in your facial muscles or other physical reasons.
  • You are unable to commit to attending all training and assessment sessions over the full 6-week period.
