Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, or a combination of Alzheimer's disease and vascular disease (a type of dementia related to blood flow in the brain)
  • People whose score on a standard memory and thinking test (called the MMSE) falls between 10 and 28 out of 30
  • People who have been assessed as having a significant level of apathy (a persistent lack of motivation or interest)
  • People who have been on a stable, unchanged dose of any psychiatric or mood-related medications
  • People who have a care partner (such as a family member or carer) who spends at least 10 hours per week with them

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who are currently experiencing a major depressive episode
  • People who are currently experiencing significant agitation, delusions (false beliefs), or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there)
  • People who are currently taking a medication that affects dopamine in the brain, other than methylphenidate
  • People who do not pass a standard safety checklist for a brain stimulation procedure called TMS — for example, those with certain pacemakers, metallic implants in or near the head, or a history of epilepsy
  • People who have a significant brain or nervous system condition beyond Alzheimer's disease, or who have a history of seizures, as determined by the study doctor
  • People who have any other health condition that the study doctor considers makes it medically unsafe to participate
