- People who have been diagnosed with their first-ever stroke
- People who are between 3 and 6 months past their stroke
- People who score 24 or higher on a standard memory and thinking test called the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, indicating normal cognitive function
- People whose finger joints (the knuckle joints) can be straightened out fully to a flat position when moved by someone else
- People with little to no muscle stiffness in the affected limb, as measured by a standard clinical scale (Modified Ashworth Scale score below 2)
