Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People between 40 and 70 years of age
  • People who have been diagnosed with moderate-to-severe COPD (classified as GOLD stage II or III)
  • People whose COPD has been stable, meaning no flare-ups or worsening of symptoms in the past 4 weeks
  • People with a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9, which is considered a "normal" weight range
  • People with adequate muscle strength, scored at level 4 or above on a standard medical scale used to measure muscle power (confirm with trial site)
  • People who are physically able to safely complete exercise tests
  • People who are willing and able to provide written consent to participate

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have serious uncontrolled health conditions affecting the heart, nervous system, or bones and joints
  • People who require high levels of supplemental oxygen (more than 2 litres per minute)
  • People who have a history of stroke or mini-strokes (sometimes called transient ischemic attacks or TIAs)
  • People with muscle, bone, or skin conditions that would interfere with sensor measurements on certain areas of the body (confirm with trial site)
  • People who have been diagnosed with other types of lung disease, such as restrictive lung disease, interstitial lung disease, or small-airway disease
  • People who have taken part in a structured exercise program at any point in the past 12 months

Note: This trial also appears to be recruiting healthy volunteers (people without COPD). Healthy participants may need to be aged 40–70, free from any acute or chronic illness, non-smokers, within the same BMI range of 18.5–24.9, and free from any limitations affecting movement or muscle use.
