Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had knee pain for more than 6 months
- People whose knee pain is rated more than 3 out of 10 in severity, caused by osteoarthritis, and has been present on more than half of days in the past month
- People whose knee X-ray shows moderate to significant joint damage from osteoarthritis (confirmed by a specific grading scale used in imaging)
- People between 45 and 80 years old
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have an inflammatory type of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis
- People whose most severe pain comes from another ongoing pain condition, such as fibromyalgia or hip osteoarthritis, rather than the knee
- People who have significant pain or muscle weakness in their legs caused by a nerve or neurological condition, such as a back nerve problem or weakness from a stroke
- People who have a separate acute (sudden or recent) pain that is more intense than their knee osteoarthritis pain
- People who currently take strong opioid pain medication at a daily dose above the equivalent of 15 mg of oral morphine
- People who have started a new medication, exercise program, behavioural therapy, or complementary treatment within the last month (those on stable treatment for more than one month are not excluded)
- People who have had a steroid or similar injection into the knee within the past month
- People who have had a radiofrequency nerve treatment on the knee within the past 3 months
- People who have had keyhole (arthroscopic) knee surgery within the past 3 months
- People who have previously had a knee replacement or open knee surgery on the more painful knee
- People who are unable to walk or climb stairs without significant physical help from another person, or who use a wheelchair (note: using a walking cane does not exclude someone)
- People who are unable to participate in study activities, for example due to difficulty understanding instructions or an inability to read and understand English
- People with an uncontrolled or unstable health condition that would prevent safe participation in the study
- People with a history of brain surgery
- People who have tattoos located on the areas of skin where sensory testing would be performed
- People who are pregnant
- People who are breastfeeding
- People who are unable to have a knee MRI scan due to implanted devices or metal objects in the body that are not compatible with MRI
