For patients with a first-episode of schizophrenia (FES):
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 35 years old
- People who have been diagnosed with first-episode schizophrenia (under the diagnosis code F20)
- People who are able to give their agreement to participate, both verbally and in writing
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are subject to any compulsory or coercive legal or psychiatric measures, including those in forensic psychiatry settings
- People whose treating doctor considers them too unwell to take part in a research study
- People who have previously taken antipsychotic medication above certain low doses for more than 2 weeks in a row within the past year, or more than 6 weeks total over their lifetime (confirm with trial site for specific dose thresholds)
- People who have taken Quetiapine (Seroquel) above 50 mg, or Risperidone (Risperdal) above 0.5 mg, in the 3 months before joining the trial
- People who have certain additional diagnoses, including borderline intellectual functioning or intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, severe substance use disorder, or psychosis caused by a medical condition, medication, or drug use
- People who are pregnant, have given birth in the last 6 months, or are breastfeeding; female participants must be using an effective form of contraception
- People who cannot have an MRI scan, for example due to metal implants or severe claustrophobia
- People who are currently experiencing acute thoughts of suicide (for example, where this has led to hospitalisation)
- People with Type 1 diabetes, a history of serious head injury, stroke, chemotherapy, or brain surgery, an underactive or overactive thyroid, epilepsy, or who are currently taking systemic steroid (glucocorticoid) treatment
- People with any other condition that a qualified doctor considers would interfere with their participation
For healthy volunteers (people without a psychiatric diagnosis):
Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 18 to 35 years old
- People who have no diagnosed mental health condition
- People who are able to give their agreement to participate, both verbally and in writing
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously taken antipsychotic medication above certain low doses for more than 2 weeks in a row within the past year, or more than 6 weeks total over their lifetime (confirm with trial site for specific dose thresholds)
- People who have taken Quetiapine (Seroquel) above 50 mg, or Risperidone (Risperdal) above 0.5 mg, in the 3 months before joining the trial
