For people with ALS:
- You have been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- You are 18 years old or older
- You are able to have a lumbar puncture (a procedure where a small sample of fluid is taken from your lower back)
- You are willing and able to give your consent to take part
For people joining as a comparison/control group:
- You are 18 years old or older
- You are already having a lumbar puncture for neurological symptoms (symptoms related to your nervous system)

Who may not be able to join:
For people with ALS:
- You have serious other health conditions alongside your ALS
- You have recently had a brain or spinal cord condition caused by injury, inflammation, problems with blood vessels, or a tumour
- You have a medical reason why a lumbar puncture would not be safe for you
For people in the comparison/control group:
- There are no specific additional exclusion criteria listed beyond not having a known nervous system condition (confirm with trial site)
