Who might be able to join this trial:
For participants with PAD (Cases – Part 1):
- People aged 18 or older
- People who are willing and able to give informed consent to participate
- People who have been officially diagnosed with peripheral artery disease (PAD) by a doctor
- People who are able to follow the study requirements throughout the trial
For participants with PAD (Cases – Part 2):
- People who have already completed Part 1 of this trial
For comparison participants (Controls):
- People who have no symptoms, history, or diagnosis of peripheral artery disease
Who may not be able to join:
For participants with PAD (Cases – Part 1):
- People whose ankle-brachial index (a blood pressure measurement comparing the ankle and arm) falls above 0.9 or below 0.4 (confirm with trial site)
- People whose artery disease is located only in the aorta or the large vessels in the pelvis area
- People who have had unstable chest pain or a heart attack within the past 12 months
- People with physical or joint/bone conditions that would prevent data from being collected
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan, including those with a pacemaker, bone growth or fusion stimulators, a tissue expander, cochlear implants, a need for continuous oxygen therapy, or permanent jewellery that cannot be removed, those who are pregnant, or those unable to walk at least 10 feet
For participants with PAD (Cases – Part 2):
- People who have had unstable chest pain or a heart attack within the past 12 months
- People with physical or joint/bone conditions that would prevent data from being collected
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan for any of the same reasons listed above under Part 1
For comparison participants (Controls):
- People with any history of peripheral artery disease
- People with known heart disease such as heart failure
- People with a known lung condition (except mild asthma)
- People who currently use tobacco products
- People with physical or joint/bone conditions that would prevent data from being collected
- People whose blood pressure measures above 150/90 mmHg at the screening visit
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan for any of the same reasons listed above under Part 1
