Who might be able to join this trial:
For people with ME/CFS:
- People who are female and between 20 and 59 years old
- People who have been formally diagnosed with ME/CFS using the International Consensus Criteria (ICC)
- People whose illness has lasted longer than 6 months
- People who experience post-exertional malaise (PEM), meaning their symptoms worsen after physical or mental activity
- People whose ME/CFS is classified as mild or moderate in severity according to NICE guidelines

- People with a BMI between 18 and 30
- People whose activity level and body weight are broadly similar to the ME/CFS participants in the study
- People who are able and willing to attend all study visits and follow study procedures
- People who are willing to use highly effective contraception throughout the study period, if there is any possibility of pregnancy
Who may not be able to join:
For people with ME/CFS:
- People whose ME/CFS is classified as severe according to NICE guidelines
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial that could affect this study's results
- People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- People with a significant psychiatric condition that is not considered part of ME/CFS and that could affect study participation or results
- People with a significant neurological condition or nerve disorder not considered part of ME/CFS
- People with active or significant heart, lung, kidney, liver, hormonal, or other serious ongoing health conditions that could interfere with the study
- People with obstructive lung disease (a condition that makes it hard to breathe out)
- People with claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces)
- People with a history of a collapsed lung that happened without an obvious cause
- People who have implanted medical devices, artificial body parts, or other conditions that are not compatible with the study treatment (confirm with trial site)
- People with chronic pain conditions unrelated to ME/CFS that could affect study assessments
- People currently doing a structured graded exercise therapy programme or a structured exercise programme
- People whose use of alcohol, tobacco, or cannabis is considered likely to affect the study results
- People who are unable to follow study procedures or communicate with the study team
- People who, in the investigator's judgement, have any condition that could affect their safety or the reliability of the study
For healthy comparison participants:
- People who have ever been diagnosed with ME/CFS
- People who are currently taking part in another clinical trial that could affect this study's results
- People who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- People with any significant psychiatric, neurological, heart, lung, kidney, liver, hormonal, or other ongoing health conditions
- People with chronic pain conditions, migraines, or frequent headaches or back pain that could affect study assessments
- People with obstructive lung disease
- People with claustrophobia
- People with a history of a collapsed lung that happened without an obvious cause
- People who have implanted medical devices, artificial body parts, or other conditions not compatible with study procedures (confirm with trial site)
- People currently doing a structured exercise programme, or who have recently made major changes to their exercise habits
- People whose use of alcohol, tobacco, or cannabis is considered likely to affect the study results
- People who are unable to follow study procedures or communicate with the study team
- People who, in the investigator's judgement, have any condition that could affect their safety or the reliability of the study
