Understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or ME/CFS, is a complex, long-term condition that affects multiple systems in the body. The most well-known feature is a deep, persistent exhaustion that does not improve with rest and is not caused by another medical condition. People with ME/CFS often also experience difficulties with memory and concentration (sometimes called "brain fog"), sleep problems, muscle or joint pain, and headaches. One of the key features of the condition is called post-exertional malaise, which means that physical or mental activity can cause symptoms to significantly worsen, sometimes for days or longer afterwards.
ME/CFS affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels across Australia, including children and teenagers. Estimates suggest that around 250,000 Australians may be living with the condition, though many cases go undiagnosed for some time.
