How these figures are counted
  • Trials on record is every trial tagged to this condition at any stage, except those withdrawn before starting or terminated early. Most are completed rather than ongoing, so this is a measure of research history, not of current activity. It is also smaller than the sitewide "trials tracked" figure, which does include withdrawn and terminated trials.
  • Recruiting now counts only trials whose registry status is "Recruiting". Trials listed as not yet recruiting or enrolling by invitation are excluded, so this understates how many may open to new participants soon.
  • Australian sites counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that list at least one Australian site. A site being listed does not mean it is currently enrolling, and Australian trials registered only on ANZCTR are not counted yet, so this understates local availability.
  • Phase 3 trials counts trials counted under "Recruiting now" that are at Phase 3.

Understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or ME/CFS, is a complex, long-term condition that affects multiple systems in the body. The most well-known feature is a deep, persistent exhaustion that does not improve with rest and is not caused by another medical condition. People with ME/CFS often also experience difficulties with memory and concentration (sometimes called "brain fog"), sleep problems, muscle or joint pain, and headaches. One of the key features of the condition is called post-exertional malaise, which means that physical or mental activity can cause symptoms to significantly worsen, sometimes for days or longer afterwards.

ME/CFS affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels across Australia, including children and teenagers. Estimates suggest that around 250,000 Australians may be living with the condition, though many cases go undiagnosed for some time. It is more commonly diagnosed in women than men, though men and people of any gender can be affected. The cause is not yet fully understood, and researchers are continuing to investigate it.

Because ME/CFS affects people differently, care is generally tailored to the individual. Management typically focuses on understanding personal limits and pacing activities to avoid worsening symptoms, as well as addressing specific symptoms like sleep difficulties or pain. A team of healthcare providers — which might include a GP, specialists, and allied health professionals — will usually work together to support someone with ME/CFS. While there is currently no universally agreed cure, many people find that careful management can help them maintain a better quality of daily life.
