Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are of Chinese ethnicity
- People aged 60 years or older
- People who are able to read Chinese and understand Mandarin or Cantonese
- People who have at least 3 of the following knee symptoms: morning stiffness lasting 30 minutes or more; a clicking or cracking sound when moving the knee joint; tenderness in the bones around the knee; visible or felt bone enlargement around the knee; or no noticeable warmth in the knee joint when touched
- People who have had knee pain for at least 3 months
- People whose knee pain rates at 3 or higher on a pain scale of 1 to 10
- People who have access to a smartphone that supports WhatsApp, either their own or belonging to a family member living in the same household
- People who are willing to give their formal agreement to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have certain medical conditions that would prevent active physical participation, such as bleeding disorders or substance misuse issues
- People whose knee pain appears to be caused by something other than osteoarthritis, such as cancer, a bone fracture, rheumatoid arthritis, or rheumatism, as determined using established medical guidelines
- People who score below 22 on a standardised cognitive assessment (the Hong Kong Montreal Cognitive Assessment), which may indicate difficulty understanding the study instructions
- People with a body mass index (a measure of body weight relative to height) above 30, which is the threshold for obesity used in guidelines for Asian populations
- People who have previously had knee replacement surgery on either knee
