Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have had their first ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel), confirmed by a neurologist using a CT or MRI scan
- People whose neurological examination shows limitations in movement and balance/posture
- People with a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 2 or higher, meaning the stroke has caused at least some noticeable disability (confirm with trial site)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have had more than one stroke in the past
- People whose resting blood pressure is below 120 or above 160 mmHg (the top number)
- People who experience a significant drop in blood pressure when standing up (orthostatic hypotension)
- People with a narrowing of the carotid arteries in the neck
- People with serious heart disease
- People with hemophilia (a condition where blood does not clot properly)
- People who have had a traumatic brain injury
- People with a seizure disorder (such as epilepsy)
- People with diabetes that is not being treated
- People with an abnormal brain wave test (EEG) result
- People who score below 22 on the Mini Mental State Examination, a test of thinking and memory ability
- People with abnormal blood test results
- People who are currently using sedative medications, or who do not take their medications regularly
- People with severe difficulty speaking or understanding language (assessed using the Western Aphasia Battery, scoring 25 or below)
- People with severe vision or hearing impairment
- People with severe loss of sensation
- People with a serious bone or joint problem
- People with another neurological condition that affects movement
- People with alcoholism
- People who use illicit drugs
- People who have smoked after receiving their stroke diagnosis
- People who are unable to walk at least 100 metres within 6 minutes, with or without a walking aid
- People who score 32 or below on the Berg Balance Scale, a test of balance ability
- People who score 70 or below on the Barthel Index, a measure of ability to perform daily activities
- People who are unable to understand spoken instructions or visual signals shown on a television screen
- People who are currently taking part in an individual or group exercise program outside of standard physiotherapy
