Who might be able to join this trial:
For older adults:
- People who meet two or more criteria on a standard frailty assessment tool called the SOF frailty index
- People who are willing to take part and follow all study procedures
- People who are able to wear and safely use the vibration device used in the study
- People whose thinking and memory skills score 23 or above on a standard cognitive test (MMSE)
- People who have pain in one or both knee joints
For stroke survivors:
- People who have been formally diagnosed by a doctor with either an ischemic (blockage-related) or hemorrhagic (bleeding-related) stroke
- People whose stroke condition is medically stable and not in an active or rapidly changing phase
- People whose affected limb has reached at least stage III on the Brunnstrom scale, a measure of movement recovery after stroke (confirm with trial site)
- People whose thinking and memory skills score 23 or above on the standard MMSE cognitive test
- People whose affected limb scores below 3 on a muscle stiffness scale called the Modified Ashworth Scale, meaning muscle stiffness is not severely elevated
- People who are able to sit safely and take part in sessions of up to 60 minutes
- People who are willing to follow all study procedures and provide written informed consent
Who may not be able to join:
For older adults:
- People who have had an acute or ongoing neurological injury affecting the arms or legs within the past 6 months
- People who have had an acute or ongoing musculoskeletal injury affecting the arms or legs within the past 6 months
- People who have had surgery on the arms or legs within the past 6 months
For stroke survivors:
- People who have had a further stroke during the current episode, or whose stroke condition is currently unstable
- People whose affected limb has a muscle stiffness score of 3 or higher on the Modified Ashworth Scale, indicating severe stiffness limiting voluntary movement
- People with significant loss of vision on one side, or severe difficulty paying attention to one side of the body, that would interfere with completing study tasks
- People with disorders affecting balance or coordination from the inner ear or cerebellum that severely limit movement
- People with bone, joint, or injury-related conditions that cause significant pain or make safe participation difficult
- People with thinking or memory difficulties caused by stroke that would prevent them from communicating effectively or following the study protocol
- People with other neurological or psychiatric conditions that are considered likely to affect movement or study results
