Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed with a specific type of oesophageal (food pipe) cancer called squamous cell carcinoma, or the same type of cancer at the junction where the food pipe meets the stomach (a specific position called Siewert type I or II), confirmed through a tissue sample test
  • People whose cancer is considered potentially removable by surgery and has not spread to distant parts of the body, based on specialist scans including an ultrasound scope and a PET-CT scan
  • People who are planned to receive a standard pre-surgery treatment program called the CROSS regimen, which involves five weeks of weekly chemotherapy (two specific drugs) combined with daily radiation therapy, followed by surgery to remove part of the food pipe, as decided by a specialist medical team
  • People whose tumour measures 10 centimetres or less in length
  • People aged 18 years or older
  • People with a general health and activity level rated at 0, 1, or 2 on the WHO performance scale (meaning able to carry out normal daily activities or only mildly limited) (confirm with trial site)
  • People whose tumour can be clearly seen and measured on a specific type of MRI scan at the start of the study
  • People who have signed a form giving their informed consent to participate
  • People without personal, family, social, or location-related circumstances that would make it difficult to follow the study schedule and attend follow-up appointments

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose oesophageal cancer is of a different type called adenocarcinoma
  • People whose cancer cannot be removed by surgery, is considered inoperable, or has spread to other parts of the body
  • People whose cancer is located at a specific position at the stomach junction classified as Siewert type III
  • People whose squamous cell carcinoma is located in the upper (neck-level) portion of the food pipe
  • People who have previously received radiation therapy or combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy to the chest area between the lungs
  • People who have had previous food pipe surgery that would prevent further surgery to remove the food pipe
  • People who have more than one separate primary cancer in the food pipe
  • People who are unable to have an MRI scan for medical or safety reasons
  • People who have had certain prior procedures (called EMR or ESD) to remove the primary tumour through a scope, where the removal was incomplete, before starting pre-surgery treatment
  • People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
  • People for whom the lead researcher judges that participation would not be in their best interest
