Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People between 50 and 60 years of age, of any sex
  • People who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure for at least 5 years
  • People whose blood pressure remains high (systolic at or above 140 mmHg and/or diastolic at or above 90 mmHg) despite taking three or more different blood pressure medications, including a water pill (diuretic)
  • People whose blood pressure is controlled (below 140/90 mmHg) but only while taking four or more blood pressure medications
  • People with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 25 and 34.9, which generally falls in the overweight to moderately obese range
  • People with a waist measurement greater than 102 cm (about 40 inches) for males, or greater than 88 cm (about 35 inches) for females

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose high blood pressure is caused by a known underlying medical condition, such as a narrowed kidney artery, an adrenal gland disorder, or a certain type of adrenal tumour
  • People who have had a major heart or stroke event in the last 6 months, such as a heart attack, stroke, or a serious worsening of heart failure
  • People with severe joint, muscle, or nerve conditions that would make it unsafe to perform a type of muscle-tensing exercise (such as those who have had a recent joint replacement, severe arthritis, or a stroke that has affected movement)
  • People with an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker or a heart defibrillator, as these are not compatible with the electrical nerve stimulation treatment used in this trial
  • People with uncontrolled irregular heart rhythms
  • People with severe skin conditions in areas where treatment pads would be placed, such as open wounds, rashes, burns, or eczema
  • People with nerve damage or reduced sensation in the skin (confirm with trial site)
  • People with a known cognitive impairment or psychiatric condition that would make it difficult to follow instructions or to give informed consent to participate
