Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People aged between 21 and 75 years old.
  • People (in the "control" group) who are scheduled for planned neck spine surgery that includes a specific procedure to relieve pressure on the spinal cord (called a decompressive laminectomy), where nerve monitoring is already being done as a routine part of their surgery.
  • People (in the "stroke" group) who have had a single stroke — either a blockage-type or bleeding-type — more than 6 months before joining the trial, and who have weakness on one side of the body as a result, and who are either having a spinal stimulator lead placed in the neck area or are scheduled for the same type of planned neck spine surgery described above, with routine nerve monitoring included.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People who have a known nervous system condition other than stroke — such as ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), spinal muscular atrophy, spinal cord injury, autoimmune nerve disease, or sensory nerve disorders — that could affect the nerves being studied in the neck area.
  • People who are not medically cleared for surgery for any reason, including pregnancy or other health conditions that make surgery unsuitable.
  • People who are currently taking medications to reduce muscle stiffness (anti-spasticity medications) or to prevent seizures (anti-epileptic medications).

This study is not part of the standard drug-approval phase pathway (for example an observational, device, behavioural, or registry study), so a phase success rate does not apply.
