Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are 18 years of age or older
- You are able to give your own consent to participate in the study
- You have been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC) confirmed through a camera examination of your bowel and tissue samples
- Your ulcerative colitis is currently active (meaning you are experiencing symptoms)
- If you are a woman who could become pregnant, you are willing to use an effective form of birth control for at least 4 weeks before starting the study and throughout the entire trial
- You are willing and able to follow all of the study's required steps and procedures
Who may not be able to join:
- Your ulcerative colitis is severe enough that you need to be treated in a hospital
- You have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease or a bowel condition that doctors have not been able to clearly classify
- You have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- You had a bowel infection in the 4 weeks before joining the study
- Scans have shown signs of serious bowel complications, such as a dangerously swollen colon or a hole in the bowel
- You are already scheduled to have surgery to remove your colon
- You had abdominal (stomach) surgery in the 60 days before joining the study
- Your blood tests show a very low level of a type of infection-fighting white blood cell (confirm with trial site)
- Your blood tests show a very high white blood cell count combined with a fever above 38°C (confirm with trial site)
- You are currently taking or planning to take another experimental medication or treatment
- You have a medical condition that is not well controlled, such as a mental health disorder or substance misuse problem
- You have a serious illness that means you are not expected to live for at least 30 more days
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are unwilling to stop taking probiotic supplements (not including food sources like yoghurt)
- You have taken antibiotics in the 30 days before joining the study, or you are likely to need antibiotic treatment during the trial
- You have had a faecal microbiota transplant (a procedure involving donor stool) within the 6 months before joining the study
- The doctor running the trial believes that joining the study would not be in your best interest
