Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) that affects the spinal area (rather than starting in the throat or mouth)
• You can be male or female
• Your ALS diagnosis was made less than two years ago, confirmed using a specific set of medical standards called the "El Escorial" criteria
• Your breathing muscle strength is above the minimum normal level (confirm with trial site)
• Your lung function is at a healthy level, including normal breathing measurements both sitting up and lying down

Who may not be able to join:

• You already show signs of weakness in your breathing muscles, based on specific breathing strength tests falling below normal ranges
• You experience breathing problems during the night (called nocturnal hypoventilation)
• You are unable to carry out the breathing measurement tests required by the trial
• You are unable to understand or physically perform the breathing exercises involved in the trial
• You have any medical reason that would make breathing muscle training unsafe for you, or you have a severe mental health condition
