Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have had their first-ever stroke (either a blocked blood vessel or a bleed in the brain), confirmed by a CT or MRI scan
  • People who are 18 years of age or older
  • People whose stroke occurred less than 3 months before joining the study
  • People who score 24 or higher on a standard memory and thinking test called the Mini Mental State Examination
  • People who are experiencing meaningful levels of anxiety and/or depression following their stroke, as measured by standard questionnaires (GAD or PHQ scoring 10 or above)

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose health is currently unstable
  • People whose stroke or brain lesion occurred more than 3 months ago
  • People who have multiple affected areas in the brain, or damage on both sides of the brain
  • People who score below 24 on the Mini Mental State Examination (the standard memory and thinking test)
  • People who have had, or currently have, other neurological, psychiatric, or significant health conditions in the year before the study that a clinician believes could affect their mental or emotional state or interfere with the study
  • People whose behavioural or thinking difficulties would prevent them from participating fully in the treatment
  • People who have received music-based therapy or rehabilitation in the year before the study
  • People with more than 3 years of formal music training or musical practice
  • People who are unable or unwilling to sign a consent form to participate
  • For the smaller group involved in brain MRI scans: people who cannot safely have an MRI (for example, due to metal in the body, claustrophobia, or sickle cell anaemia), or who are unable to give separate consent for the MRI procedure
