Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People who have been diagnosed through a tissue biopsy with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (a specific type of esophageal cancer) that has spread to nearby lymph nodes or grown into surrounding tissue, but has not spread to distant parts of the body, and cannot be surgically removed.
  • People whose cancer is considered suitable for treatment with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy aimed at controlling the disease (rather than surgery).
  • People who are aged 70 or older, and/or who are unable to tolerate chemotherapy given through a drip due to other health conditions, and who have severe difficulty swallowing or a blockage affecting eating.
  • People whose cancer can be assessed and measured using standard imaging scans, as determined by the treating doctor at the trial site.
  • People who are not considered suitable for surgery with the intent to cure.
  • People whose blood cell counts and blood health fall within acceptable ranges — specifically, adequate levels of white blood cells, platelets, and haemoglobin (confirm with trial site for exact values).
  • People whose kidneys are functioning at an acceptable level, based on blood test results (confirm with trial site for exact values).
  • People whose liver is functioning at an acceptable level, based on blood test results including bilirubin, liver enzymes, and protein levels (confirm with trial site for exact values).
  • People whose blood clotting function falls within an acceptable range, or who are on blood-thinning medication with clotting levels within the intended treatment range.
  • People who have a negative pregnancy test taken within 24 hours before the first dose of the trial treatment.
  • People who are willing to participate voluntarily, sign a consent form, follow the trial procedures, and attend follow-up appointments.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People whose cancer has grown directly into nearby major structures such as the aorta (main heart artery) or trachea (windpipe).
  • People who have previously received chemotherapy or radiation therapy for esophageal cancer.
  • People who have previously received any cancer-directed systemic treatment (such as drug therapy) for esophageal cancer.
  • People who have had a major surgical procedure — other than insertion of a feeding tube, a biopsy, or treatment for a significant injury — within 28 days before joining the trial, or who are expected to need major surgery during the trial period.
  • People who have been diagnosed with another cancer within the past 5 years, with the exception of certain very early-stage skin or cervical conditions (confirm with trial site).
  • People who have a fistula (an abnormal opening or tunnel) involving the stomach or oesophagus.
  • People who have an active infection that requires treatment with systemic medications (such as antibiotics or antifungals).
  • People with a known history of HIV, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C infection.
  • People who have taken part in another clinical trial involving an experimental drug or device within the 4 weeks before starting this trial.
  • People who have a history of lung inflammation (pneumonitis) not caused by infection that required steroid treatment, or who currently have pneumonitis.
  • People who are known to have an allergy or sensitivity to any of the medications used in this trial.
  • People who are unable or unwilling to follow the trial's requirements, as assessed by the trial doctor.
