Who might be able to join this trial:
For people who have had a stroke:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have had their first-ever stroke (either a blockage or a bleed in the brain)
- At least 6 months have passed since the stroke
- Weakness or reduced movement affecting one arm or hand (but not both sides)
- Arm movement ability falling within a specific mid-range on a standard assessment scale called the Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity scale (confirm with trial site)
- Muscle stiffness in the elbow, wrist, or fingers is mild or absent, as measured by a standard clinical scale (confirm with trial site)
- Enough muscle strength in the shoulder, upper arm, and wrist to reach a score of at least 3 out of 5 on a standard strength test (confirm with trial site)
- Able to understand and follow the study instructions
- Willing to provide written consent to participate
For healthy participants (no history of stroke):
- Adults aged 18 or older
- No history of any neurological disease
- Able to understand and follow the study instructions
- Willing to provide written consent to participate
Who may not be able to join:
For people who have had a stroke:
- People who have a second stroke during the study period
- People who have received botulinum toxin (Botox) injections within the 3 months before the study starts
- People with a history of epileptic seizures
- People with any metal object near the area where the brain stimulation would be applied
- People with implanted devices such as a pacemaker or neurostimulator that are not compatible with a brain stimulation technique called TMS (confirm with trial site)
- People with serious conditions affecting the arm, such as major joint, rheumatic, or nerve and muscle diseases
- People who are pregnant
- People experiencing confusion or significantly reduced alertness
- People unable to take part in one-hour treatment sessions
- People unable to follow study procedures for any reason, such as a language barrier, a psychological condition, or dementia
- People with a current or past history of substance abuse, including heavy alcohol use
- People who have taken part in another interventional clinical trial within 30 days before enrolling
For healthy participants:
- People with a serious muscle, joint, or neurological condition affecting their non-dominant arm
- People who are pregnant
- People experiencing confusion or significantly reduced alertness
- People unable to take part in one-hour treatment sessions
- People unable to follow study procedures
- People with a current or past history of substance abuse, including heavy alcohol use
- People who have taken part in another interventional clinical trial within 30 days before enrolling
