Who might be able to join this trial:

If you have thumb joint arthritis (TMC OA group):

  • You are willing to take part voluntarily
  • An orthopedic specialist has confirmed you have thumb base arthritis using an X-ray (at any stage of the condition)
  • You have had thumb symptoms for 6 months or longer
  • You are between 25 and 75 years old
  • Your thumb pain is at least 4 out of 10 during everyday activities
  • You can move your thumb outward (away from your palm) at least 40 degrees
  • You have the mental ability to understand and follow the study procedures (if you are 65 or older, you may need to pass a short memory and thinking test with a score of 21 or above)

If you are joining as a healthy comparison participant (Control group):

  • You are willing to take part voluntarily
  • You have no thumb pain
  • You are between 25 and 75 years old
  • You have no signs of thumb base arthritis
  • You have negative results on physical tests used to check for thumb arthritis
  • You have the mental ability to understand and follow the study procedures (if you are 65 or older, you may need to pass a short memory and thinking test with a score of 21 or above)

Who may not be able to join: (These apply to both groups)

  • You cannot move your thumb outward 40 degrees or more due to severe pain or a physical deformity
  • You have had a recent injury or previous surgery on your hand or wrist
  • You have received any treatment for hand or thumb pain in the same arm within the last 6 months
  • You are currently taking anti-inflammatory medicines (such as ibuprofen or similar)
  • You have a nerve condition in your hand, arm, or neck that affects your sense of touch or position (such as carpal tunnel syndrome or a pinched nerve in the neck — confirm with trial site if unsure)
  • You have another condition affecting your hand or arm at the same time (such as trigger finger or De Quervain's disease)
  • Your joints are unusually flexible throughout your body, based on a specific flexibility scoring test (confirm with trial site)
  • You have a nerve, muscle, immune system, joint, or infectious disease affecting the whole body
  • You currently have or are being treated for cancer
  • You have a neurological condition that affects how you feel pain
  • You have a significant visual impairment
  • You are pregnant
